Lawyer Bob cheats on his uptight wife Cindy by spending an afternoon with a prostitute. Bob’s buddy Ted also commits infidelity on his spouse Julie by seducing his secretary. Bob and Ted decide to further spice up their sex lives by swapping wives without their knowledge. However, Cindy and Julie find out about what their husbands have done, so they plot to get even on the guys by following them to the exotic nightspot The Mask Club and joining in on the carnal activities going on at said club.

Directed by Suze Randall and husband Humphry Knipe (under his Victor Nye alias), 1986’s Unveiled is about as eighties as it gets, but don’t let that dissuade you. The story, such as it is (this is far more about the visuals and the sex than it is about the narrative) tells the raunchy tale of a well to do lawyer named Bob (Mike Horner). He is, like many men that exist in the world of adult films, a little irritated that his wife, a beautiful woman named Cindy (Krista Lane), just isn’t taking care of his manly wants and desires the way that he feels she should be. Oddly enough, his best friend Ted (Jake Scott) is in a similar situation. He’s lucky enough to be married to Julie (Erica Boyer) but it’s a two edged sword… she’s not putting out.
As such, Bob gets what he needs from a kindly hooker (Patti Petite) while Ted gets his fill of his secretary (Alexis Greco). Both men are doing this on the sly, or so they think – Julie is going through Ted’s pockets one fine day and finds that he’s left a used condom in there. Oops! Understandably distraught, she heads out to hang with gal pal Cindy one night while Bob and Ted head out to do their own thing. This leads to a strange turn of events when Ted sleeps with Cindy and Bob with Julie, with neither wife any the wiser. What? No, of course they’re wiser, they figure out what happened pretty quickly and then decide to get even by donning clever mask disguises and following the guys to a bizarre sex club… where they then decide to get in on the action themselves.
So long as mimes don’t kill the mood for you (hey, they’re fucking creepy) then this one might do it for you. As stated earlier, the plot is pretty minimalist here but we’ve got enough of a story going that the filmmakers successful hang the increasingly flamboyant sex scenes off of it well enough. There’s a lot of interesting costumes on display, especially once we get to the sex club in the later part of the movie, and that lends itself well to the colorful visuals that are always an important part of Randall’s work.
While there was clearly a lot more work put into the staging, design, lighting and camerawork than the writing, it pays off. This is a great looking movie, the cast are all in fine form and very photogenic and they perform pretty admirably. The sex scenes have got a nice energy to them and there’s plenty of visible and audible enthusiasm on display from all involved. As to the cast members themselves, they’re likeable enough. Horner and Scott are fun to watch in a rascally sort of way and while it’s hard to be like ‘yeah, go get them hookers and show your frigid wives whose boss’ this is all meant to be fantasy and it -never tries for reality. Likewise, once the girls get wind of what’s really going on, their ‘revenge’ plan is just as ridiculous and hard to support once you start thinking about it too much. The solution? Don’t think about it too much. Have fun with it. Go into this one expecting a loose, playful and flamboyant XXX feature and you’ll get what you came for.

A softcore cult classic that was instrumental in helping establish the legend of Skinemax while playing a significant role in the depletion of many a pubescent teenage boy’s tube sock supply back in the day, 1987’s ELEVEN DAYS, ELEVEN NIGHTS is a gender-swapped Italian ripoff of 9 1/2 WEEKS from notorious Eurocult journeyman Joe D’Amato. Written by Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi–the husband-and-wife masters of erotica who would later gift us with TROLL 2–ELEVEN DAYS, ELEVEN NIGHTS pretty much follows the template of D’Amato’s “Black Emanuelle” films of the late ’70s, right down to the presence of Laura Gemser, this time as the editor to nympho journalist Sarah Asproon (Jessica Moore), who’s writing a scintillating memoir of her sexual exploits entitled My One Hundred Men (Drudi uses the pseudonym “Sarah Asproon” for her writing credit, giving the film a bogus autobiographical ruse in the tradition of “Emmanuelle Arsan”). Sarah is nearing completion of the book as she seduces man #100, none-too-bright New Orleans engineer Michael Terenzi (Joshua McDonald, absurdly dubbed by the dulcet tones of the venerable Ted Rusoff). They have a torrid sexual encounter on a ferry, during which she steals his wallet and calls him later that evening for another hookup. Michael is due to be married in twelve days to his nice but boring, sexually unadventurous fiancee Helen (Mary Sellers) and isn’t looking forward to a dull sex life or dealing with his controlling in-laws. So he doesn’t hesitate to get all of his wild desires out of his system, diving head-on into a kinky and obsessive fling with Sarah, who wants to make the most of what little time they have, purring: “Give me all the nights you have left! Eleven nights…just for me!”

Yet another Euro film based on the memoirs of goodtime gal Josephine Mutzenbacher (aside from several softcore, there were also the XXX SENSATIONAL JANINE and PROFESSIONAL JANINE). All credits are pseudonymous in the US video version. Several of the plot incidents are also found in PROFESSIONAL JANINE. Among the familiar set pieces are the party at the tavern, including the orchestra, and the missing watch scene.
Josephine, a somewhat hard-looking redhead in her late 20s (Jane Iwanoff), shacked up with a businessman in the city, gets a visit from her country cousin Veronica, whom she initiates into the trade (though I’d say, watching Veronica in action, that she’s been there before). After Jo’s b.f. catches them partying, the girls have to make their own way, eventually seducing an *old* guy they meet at a brothel into financing a whorehouse of their own.
Fairly trivial stuff, but the women are offbeat attractive in a Europorn way. They don’t look like plasticized, coked-up Hollywood pornettes of the late 70s/early 80s (or today, for that matter!). Dig the hairy pits and legs on hick Veronica, a little plain jane brunette hardly-the-type.
Billian’s mise-en-scéne is not up to his near-contemporary “Josefine Mutzenbacher — wie sie wirklich war,” aka “Sensational Janine,” but it’s still a professional-looking picture, and well above average for the genre.

Metzger’s Farewell to Charms

The last and least-liked of Radley Metzger’s explicit quintet shows the talented filmmaker now almost dispensing with plot altogether, a trend he previously toyed with on his free form BARBARA BROADCAST in a radical departure from the classic three act structure, borrowed from stage and screen lore since times immemorial, he previously and rigorously adhered to. Though he has never gone on record about it, my guess is that Metzger realized he had pretty much expanded the fornication film form to its genre-imposed limits with THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN and was now gently phasing himself out of what was indeed increasingly becoming an industry (rather than art form) he had entered somewhat reluctantly in the first place out of economic necessity as the commercial availability of hardcore had made simulated screen sex obsolete. That said, MARASCHINO CHERRY still towers over much of its contemporary competition and may be in need of re-evaluation, an opportunity for which now graciously granted by the kind folks at Video-X-Pix who have issued a sterling 2 disc “Platinum Elite Collector’s Edition” (hopefully, the first of many) in glorious widescreen to supplant their earlier bare bones pan & scan single platter.
Metzger’s customary sophisticated wit remains very much in evidence throughout. In hindsight, it’s hard to shake the impression that the director was committing the cinematic equivalent of putting out the garbage, incorporating any old and unused footage (mostly from MISTY) he still had lying around. The loosely constructed narrative of upscale New York madam Gloria Leonard initially attempting to hide the nature of her business from her allegedly naive country cousin Jenny Baxter and subsequently initiating her into following in her footsteps proves perfect for such purpose. Leonard was already a respected if not always revered pillar of porn, a tell it like it is liaison mainstream sources were ever eager to pester for quips and quotes. In temperance of Gloria’s grand dame glowering, the underrated Baxter (such radiant presence essaying the title role in Shaun Costello’s TRAVAILS OF JUNE if usually a second stringer in high profile porn) projects an immensely appealing wide-eyed innocence without resorting to hick shtick.
As madam Maraschino takes care of husband Wade Nichols’ needs at the start of another busy day at the bordello, her hardworking assistants Lesllie Bovee and Clea Carson are already preparing for their customary client onslaught, placating police and postal services in a typical example of Metzger whimsy elevating the erotic element by fusing sex with sly social commentary. Suzanne McBain, unforgettable as the tragic call girl from Gerard Damiano’s stupendous ODYSSEY, is the resident “clock girl”, dispassionately whipped every hour, her piercing screams telling time ! One of the industry’s truly outstanding submissives, C.J. Laing, punctuates proceedings as the madam’s personal slave who will be thoroughly ravished by Gloria and Annette Haven for film’s climax in the justifiably legendary dungeon scene featuring the inspired use of Scotch-filled shot glasses and the threat of a hot plate.
Cult favorite Susan Jensen owes her self-despised moniker of “Constance Money” to the director with whom she shared many a myth-making spat. Not caring about her billing on MISTY (only specifying “anything but Constance”, a name she loathed), the mischievous movie maker subsequently immortalized her financial demands ! Parting ways presumably less than amicably thereafter, Radley recycled cutting room leftovers into both BARBARA BROADCAST (the frequently censored S&M session with Jamie Gillis) and MARASCHINO CHERRY, the actress successfully suing for damages on both occasions. Memorably appearing fully clothed in the Central Park pond to tempt toy boat enthusiast Lance Knight, whose only other appearance seems to have been a non-sex bit in Chuck Vincent’s BANG BANG YOU GOT IT, she strokes him off as they watch an 8mm reel of Erica Havens blowing a faceless stud. More intricately inserted is a second sequence with Marc Valentine actually reprising his role a few years down the line to provide context. Original footage has him playing a Spanish bullfighter (now re-interpreted as the fantasy alter ego of a shy client) sharing his saucy senorita (one shot Conchita Costello who bears an uncanny resemblance to TV’s BONES’ divine Michaela Conlin) with the male drag attired Money.
Special mention for all you real world skeleton in the closet aficionados must be made of Baxter’s spirited threesome with the late Spalding Gray of SWIMMING TO CAMBODIA fame (who also appeared in a hardcore capacity in Zebedy Colt’s notorious “roughie” FARMER’S DAUGHTERS) and Rocky Millstone, who played the title role in Ron Wertheim’s LITTLE ORPHAN SAMMY. Production values are solid if comparatively generic by director’s own lofty standards, an adjective extending to sets and locations, both of which while anonymously luxurious are a far cry from the overwhelming Old World opulence on display in his ’60s soft-core work (especially CAMILLE 2000 and THE LICKERISH QUARTET) and his initial fornication forays.

The invention of censorship, which dates a few years later than the invention of cinema, pushed smutty films to go underground which is synonymous with total freedom, since banned, erotic films could become fully pornographic.
Banned but still produced, filmed and especially shown, these films are called “from brothels”, as some were shown in smoking and waiting rooms of brothels. It is there, or in private collections, that they went through the 20th century, waiting for the explosion of the 1970s — and the legalization of the pornographic genre.
Usually anonymous (and rightly so!), difficult to date, these films pave the way of this genre (minimised preliminaries, light screenplays, compulsory figures, limited duration of films…), and at the same time carrying some specific features: sometimes humour (Sœur Vaseline) and more often, a sort of… innocence, that of the all first times.

An English soldier returns home from the Zulu war with the daughter of a tribal king as his slave (a gift that he was given for “saving” the kings life). While he was away, his wife had been having an affair with the female housekeeper. Not at all pleased with being a slave, the Ebony princess notices the mistress of the house engaging in a quick bit of foreplay with the housekeeper and plots her revenge starting with the seduction of the mistress. Jealousy spreads like wildfire and before you know it, she has turned the household into a lustful frenzy of sex and hatred.

True curiosities in the history of cinema, these films were originally screened in the waiting rooms of brothels.
The Good Old Naughty Days is a refreshing and impertinent anthology about the pleasures of the flesh. Both naive and racy, it was programmed at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2002. The film has a historical and sociological dimension completely foreign to the spirit of today’s porn flicks. Spontaneity and naturalistic grace clearly contribute to the appeal and humor of this ode to insouciance from the Roaring Twenties…

Continuing its exploration of the weirdest moments of cinema, Cult Epics brings us Vintage Erotica anno 1940 (aka Les Archives d’Eden), a collection of French porn vignettes covering the early years of celluloid sex from 1900 to 1940.
Through these short films, 15 black & white silent sequences accompanied by a soundtrack, we discover the sexual fantasies of our elders and though, technically, cinema was in its mumbling stage, it is evident that these filmmakers quickly assimilated and mastered the visual potential of this medium. Delivering XXX in various settings (maids, bourgeois, nurses, lesbians, fetish, spanking, nudism without forgetting a Santa Claus cameo!) through different sophisticated shots, involving lots of close-ups, they seem to have established all the rules of a genre that doesn’t seem to have changed much in the last 100 years.

Candy is a 1968 sex farce film directed by Christian Marquand based on the 1958 novel by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg, from a screenplay by Buck Henry. The film satirizes pornographic stories through the adventures of its naive heroine, Candy, played by Ewa Aulin. It stars Marlon Brando, Ewa Aulin, Ringo Starr, John Huston and Enrico Maria Salerno. Popular figures such as Sugar Ray Robinson, Anita Pallenberg, and Florinda Bolkan appear in cameo roles.

When I started watching Candy I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach during the first 5 – 10 minutes. Ewa Aulin appeared as the titular girl and looked pretty enough but didn’t really seem like a great actress. John Astin was also onscreen so that was a plus. But would I be subjected to a couple of hours of trippy, dippy, hippy hijinks or would the film be something other than that? Thankfully, it was a great mixture of both and as soon as Richard Burton’s character turned up (a self-aggrandising poet named MacPhisto) I was laughing hard and ready to journey alongside the onscreen assortment of oddballs.
Based on a novel by Terry Southern (a loose adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide), Candy is directed by Christian Marquand and adapted for the screen by Buck Henry and both do a fantastic job.
The story concerns Candy and all who fall for her (which happens to be pretty much everyone) as she travels around with her father and her uncle (twins, both played by the great Astin). There’s the poet played by Burton, a Mexican gardener played by Ringo Starr, a half-baked military man played by Walter Matthau, a brilliant doctor played by James Coburn, Chalres Aznavour’s hunchback criminal, an artistically-minded film director and the mystical Grindl (played by Marlon Brando, showing a style of comedy that I never expected of him in a fantastic and fun performance). Then there’s the worrying lust that her uncle (identical to her father) has for her.
While Candy may, at times, feel like no more than a series of linked up skits it’s more cohesive and linear than something like The Magic Christian (another work based on Terry Southern’s writing) and more consistently entertaining and amusing. The script is full of many absolute gems and I must say that I’m surprised to find that this isn’t used as an oft-quoted comedy goldmine, which it certainly is.
The performances are pretty inconsistent but the joy here is in watching the bigger star names have a hell of a lot of fun – Ringo Starr may not be the best actor here but he is not onscreen for as long as the great Burton or any of the other star players.
The character of Candy is so naïve that it borders on the dumb but this seems to have been played up for comic effect too (or, at least, that’s the way I like to view it) and works out just fine in the context of the lusty punchlines used for each segment.
With a finale that nicely allows the audience to catch up, if ever so briefly, with a favourite character or two, Candy proves to be a pleasant surprise after that unsure beginning and while there’s certainly an infusion of “The Age Of Aquarius” and free love to everything it’s all tempered by some sharp dialogue that’s delivered with relish by A-list stars of the 60s having an absolute blast.
