Things turn much, much nastier, however, with a grueling finale that can only be described as what might happen if David Lynch directed William Friedkin’s S&M shocker Cruising.

The film was shot in Mari language and tells 23 different tales influenced by the Mari folklore. Each of these stories represents the specific approach to sexuality of “the last authentic pagans in Europe”. In view of this, the film could be considered a Mari “Decameron”.

Comprised of 23 vignettes illuminating the pagan-influenced mores of western Russia’s Meadow Mari, the latest film from director Alexey Fedorchenko (Silent Souls) is a beguiling, painterly portrait of a culture driven by a ritualistic appreciation of female beauty and feminine sexuality.

Pagan folklore is alive amongst the Meadow Mari, a Finno-Ugric ethnic group in western Russia. Alexey Fedorchenko’s latest film comprises twenty-three vignettes that centre on the sexual lives of a collection of Mari women, recreating an idiosyncratic world of magical realism in which female fertility, beauty, and, ultimately, happiness is the driving force.

In Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari, all the women’s names begin with the letter O. There’s Okanay Oshanyak, whose aunt rubs her naked body in order to help its development. There’s Oshtylech, who picks through a bucket of phallic mushrooms in order to help select her ideal husband. And Onya, who, at the advice of a friend, smells her husband’s private parts to confirm her suspicion of his infidelity. Each story takes an endearing approach to love and sexuality as it exists within Mari culture. But the film does not shy away from the folklore’s darker undertones: witness the tragic consequence of Oropti succumbing to a forest spirit’s curse, or preteen Ormarche witnessing the older girls perform a naked dance at the whim of male ghosts. These fables exalt femininity, and the power it holds within — and beyond — Mari customs.

Collaborating once more with scriptwriter Denis Osokin, Fedorchenko continues his concern with the fading Mari culture. Abandoning the resigned and elegiac approach of 2010’s Silent Souls, here he employs an uplifting colour palette of rich blues, and casts pale-skinned actresses (both professional and non-) to deliver his painterly tableaux of rural life untouched by secular modernity. At times grotesque, but never vilifying, the film is a tender, beguiling portrait of a culture preserved within its folklore, inviting us to celebrate it alongside the Mari.

When producer Andre Samarcq proposed that Rollin shoot yet another hardcore feature for him, Rollin countered with an offer to shoot a “real movie” for the same amount of money, quickly writing this script and filming it over nine days. Although compromised by budget and schedule limitations, this is one of Rollin’s most interesting films, reminiscent of early Cronenberg (especially the experimental features Stereo and Crimes of the Future) with its depiction of a group of people suffering from a mysterious sickness which is gradually destroying their capacity to remember, and eventually to think and function in any way. The central role of Elisabeth provides Brigitte Lahaie with her most substantial part of the many she played for Rollin, and her performance as a woman conscious that she is gradually losing not simply her memory, but her entire identity is subtle and moving. Given Rollin’s repeated use of memory as a key theme in many of his films, there’s something particularly disturbing about its obliteration here and the film’s climactic echoes of the Holocaust and its final tentative, fragile intimation of the survival of human feeling even when the mind and personality are lost, provides one of the most affecting moments in all his work. (Extras include a brief introduction and two very short interview clips with Rollin, plus a couple of short softcore sex scenes he shot to boost the film’s commercial appeal; when the movie proved a financial failure, the producer shot and inserted some hardcore scenes against Rollin’s wishes, pushing the ambitious project back into the porn ghetto the director had been trying to escape.)

Her husband, Rick (Chad England), while square-jawed, blue-eyed, and perfectly tanned, spends too much time at the office or on month-long business trips (invariably to Aspen or the Indianapolis 500), sending Barbi into fits of twitchy boredom…down there. Her only outlet for her frustrations is her salacious neighbor friend, Sheila (Bridget Brno), and her swinging thespian husband, Mark (Jared Sanford), who put on quite a show about being sexually liberated, but do it from the fenced-in privacy of their backyard pool.

It doesn’t take but one complaint from the otherwise terminally compliant Barbi to get Rick turning around and walking out the door, leaving a crushed Barbi with no other alternative than to sample from the sexual bounty of the ’70s. Thus, she becomes a heroine straight out of De Sade, only Scotchgarded, bouncing from one sexual indiscretion to the next until she winds up the star attraction at an orgy lifted straight out of Metzger’s Camille 2000 (even using identical music cues). While Biller certainly milks the garish interiors and woeful fashions of the day for all the humor they’re worth (lenser C. Thomas Lewis’s Brady Bunch cinematography is every bit the tour de force Edward Lachman’s Oscar-nominated work on Far from Heaven was, and Biller’s own production design is as attentive and overzealous as Vincent Peranio’s work for John Waters), her intentions are far more focused and vicious than your average episode of That ’70s Show.

Poking fun at the 1970s is like shooting sardines in a can, what with the yin and yang of post-revolution hippies just reaching their nudist burn-out point and forever-square suburbanites pretending to expand their horizons by doing what their bachelor magazines tell them to do. Viva’s intentionally flat performances and flatter double entendres (he, at an orgy: “I could eat her alive”; she: “Eat me alive!”) mercilessly satirize the Playboy mindset even as the film revels in the kitschiness of it all. It walks a fine line (and, at just over two hours, for a surprisingly long time), but the film’s kicker—in which Barbi is recruited to play a role in a show paying homage to the 1950s because, as the show’s director says, “people are bored to death with nudity”—confirms Biller’s self-awareness of the way even parody can be used to simultaneously illuminate and evade the social ills of today.

Experimental film mixes genres, styles and even XXX vs. soft-core

Paul Vecchiali’s work is an acquired taste, as he is a filmmaker who marches to the beat of his own drum, never fashionable or popular. Produced by a famous pornographer of the day (Jean-Francois Davy of “Exhibition” fame) it’s a rare mainstream (sort of) movie that carefully integrates explicit hardcore sex content into a strong story.Like other of his films, notably “Femme Femme”, Vecchiali seems most influenced from the Nouvelle Vague by Jacques Rivette, with his strong heroines and challenging mix of camp with seriousness. Here we have Myriam Mezieres, an uninhibited performer who takes Paul’s challenge to do strong soft-core sex scenes to heart, as a trench-coated hard-boiled detective, with most of the many prominent roles going to similarly tough women. Her case is to investigate what’s going on with Helene Surgere’s adult son, who we see at the opening of the film starring in a hardcore black & white stag movie that leaves nothing to the imagination.
With plenty of shoot-outs and mock-violence, Vecchiali creates a strange, campy world for her to move in, revolving around a nightclub where drag queens perform on stage alongside cis-females, wigs are on everybody, and cast members sometimes burst into song or dance without provocation. There are several orgies integrated into the convoluted plot, both staged both soft-core and hardcore, and ultimately when the story is resolved and a scandal blasted across the front page of the newspapers, we see Myriam walking away with the imagery of a serious film as conclusion.
Along the way the camp approach comes on so strong that this movie has “cult classic” written all over it, even if that did not come to pass. The direct-sound dialog has bite, the acting top-notch and the unpredictability of situations delightful for the jaded movie buff. However, a more general “art house” target audience is likely to have found it all too precious and indigestible
